COSMOGENIC
Now to somewhere nearer the present. Dave and I started writing some of these songs in France around Christmas time four years ago. He is a highly talented songwriter, a great catalyst for my ideas and, as many of you know, an exceptionally gifted musician. We began to explore many avenues of how to construct songs. But most of all it was great fun to take a blank piece of paper, a still guitar and a silent voice, and to start toying around to see what happened!
'Don't ask no questions' was born around this time - the beginning acoustic phrase being something that Dave played to tune the guitar when he picked it up! And 'Key to my heart', the Latin/Ethnic tune was inspired by the wealth of Arab music available in France.
It soon got to the stage where it was too impractical (& costly) for Dave to keep flying to & fro to songwrite so I made what was, at that time, a big decision to move back to England to further explore just how far we could go. The music we had written was just to precious and exciting to let lie dormant.
It's very interesting what happens when two people songwrite as sometimes Dave would be as quick as lightening to pick up on threads and ideas, 'Don't drown' for example,c was simply a lyric and melody which had to sound "watery". Somehow Dave translated this onto guitar (he took underwater deep sea diving guitar lessons 5 years previous unbeknownst to me!) Other songs were left to 'marinate' for a while whilst the sections sorted themselves out - 'Special' for example, started as a couple of phrases that needed to 'soak' until one day it was ready to be cooked....
For me, the spookiest song by far on the album is 'If the Moon...'. We had just watched the eclipse and this song simply started writing itself. Lyrically there are, for me, some small imperfections that I left in, due to the fact that changing it made it unnaturally logical & controlled. This was definitely one of the songs that that felt like it had nothing to do with me directing it. A very humbling feeling.
So, I guess all that said, we have adopted & welcomed these songs into our lives, as have friends who have come to watch our gigs (thank you!). My greatest "goosebump factor" would be if you set just one of these songs to repeat on your CD player at home because it meant something to you personally, in your life.
That's what songs are for...
